CONWAY, SC – The Winthrop women's soccer team defeated Big South rival Coastal Carolina 1-0 on Friday evening at the CCU Soccer Field to capture their third straight conference victory.
The Eagles record improves to 7-8 overall and 3-3 in the conference, while the Chanticleers fell to 9-5 overall and 5-2 in conference play.
Tricia Vensel scored the only goal of the match in the 22nd minute for her first goal of the season. Vensel retained possession of the ball after an attempted Coastal Carolina clear failed, and fired her shot past goalie Amy Haggard into the left corner of the net.
The Chanticleers had two opportunities in the 9th and 18th minutes to tie the match, but goalie Dimi Poulos would deny them from scoring.
Emily McColl gave Coastal Carolina their best look at scoring all night in the 75th minute. Her shot was initially saved by Poulos, bounced out of her hands for a second, and fell on it.
The Chanticleers outshot Winthrop 15-6 in total shots, and a 6-4 advantage in attempts-on-goal. Both teams had four corner kicks on the evening.
Vensel and Courtney Durbin led the Eagles with two shots apiece, while Chelsea White and Jessica Haufeld added one shot each. Poulos picked up her fourth shutout of the season and finished with a total of six saves.
Haggard snagged three saves for Coastal Carolina, while Blair Monroe had a team-high four shots.
It was the first loss at home for the Chanticleers this season. The three-game winning streak is the longest since the 2006 season when Winthrop won four games in a row.
“We worked hard the whole game,” said head coach Melissa Heinz. “Coastal is a great team, and it was a good back-and-forth game. I was thankful that our players were able to come away with the win. Tricia did a good job getting into the space and scoring the goal. It is a big win for us and I am proud of my players and staff tonight.”
Winthrop will be back in action on Monday, Oct. 20 as it travels to take on Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. in conference action.
