RALEIGH, NC—Winthrop’s women’s tennis team fell to No. 36 North Carolina State 6-1 Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, NC. Winthrop sophomore Patricia Coimbra posted the lone win for the Lady Eagles.
With the loss, Winthrop falls to 1-9 as it continues to play against nationally-ranked opponents while N.C. State improves to 8-2.
The Lady Eagles lost all three doubles matches but nearly claimed a victory at number two before Antoniya Bagaric and Coimbra’s comeback attempt fell short against Berkeley Brock and Catherine Grotz.
Coimbra posted a straight set victory (6-4, 6-2) over Grotz at number two singles to collect her second singles win of the season and second of the weekend.
Larissa Bekmetova battled back at number six singles and forced a tiebreaker after winning the second set 6-2 over Neils Barringer but eventually lost the tiebreak 10-5 giving the match to the Wolfpack.
Winthrop will make its home debut Friday, March 9, when it plays Armstrong Atlantic at 9 a.m. and Radford at 2 p.m. at Memorial Courts.
