BLACKSBURG, VA—Winthrop’s women’s tennis team dropped two road matches over the weekend as they lost 5-2 to Old Dominion and 6-1 to No. 66 Virginia Tech.
Junior Larisa Bekmetova won her first match after returning from a three-month layoff with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 decision playing No. 6 singles at ODU. Freshman Paula Pereira claimed the other point for the Lady Eagles in the 5-2 loss against ODU.
Periera knocked off Barbara Costa 7-5, 6-4 in the number five singles match.
The Lady Eagles continue to play a tough non-conference schedule and dropped Sunday’s match to No. 66 Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. After loosing both matches on the road Winthrop remains winless on the season and stands at 0-8.
Senior Ana Paula Novaes picked up the only point against the Hokies after she finished off Ashley James 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 2 singles match. Novaes is now 3-5 in singles play this season.
The women’s tennis team returns to the court when it opens defense of its Big South Conference title on the road March 3 at Charleston Southern. The Lady Eagles will turn around and play N.C. State on March 4.
