ROCK HILL, SC-- One of the key reasons for the successful start to the season for the women's basketball team has been defense and statistically it shows.
The Eagles are ranked 39th nationally in points per game at 55.9, but are ranked 3rd in the nation in Field Goal Percentage Defense at .314. Winthrop is also holding opponents to just 27 percent shooting from behind the arc.
Rebounding also plays a strong role in defense and Winthrop has held a +3.1 advantage over its opponents this season, which ranks 101st nationally.
Winthrop has held three opponents to 49 points or less that included a Jacksonville team that was averaging more than 70 points a game.
