Women's Tennis Squad Named All-Academic Team By ITA (7-19-05)

Four Individual Members Of Women's and Men's Team Earn ITA Scholar-Athlete Recognition

ROCK HILL, SC—The 2005 Winthrop women’s tennis squad has received an All-Academic Team award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for its cumulative team grade point average for the past academic year, and three members of the women’s squad and one from the men’s team were also honored as ITA Scholar- Athletes.

 

Coach Cid Carvalho’s women’s team, which captured its fourth straight Big South Conference championship and automatic bid to the NCAA regional tournament, compiled a 3.32 cumulative grade point average.  A 3.20 or above is required by the ITA for consideration as an All-Academic Team. 

 

The three members of the women’s team who were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes were Lucille Kleynhans, a sophomore from South Africa , who compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA; Paula Takahashi, a junior from Brazil , who also had a 4.0 GPA; and senior Ana Maria Simanca from Colombia, who achieved a 3.5 GPA.

 

Sophomore Jorge Padilla from Spain, joined the three women as he compiled a 3.83 GPA as a member of the Big South champion men’s squad.
