YORK, SC—Four Winthrop athletic teams were honored Monday night by the York County Council for winning Big South Conference championships in 2004-05 and earning bids to NCAA championship tournaments.
During the regular meeting of the York County Council, Councilman Rick Lee recognized the accomplishments of the Winthrop men’s basketball team, the volleyball team and the men’s and women’s tennis teams. Lee along with Council Chair Steve McNeely presented head basketball coach Gregg Marshall, head volleyball coach Joel McCartney and head tennis coach Cid Carvalho with special awards for their team’s accomplishments and for bringing recognition and honor to the university and to the entire York County community.
The Eagle basketball team captured its fifth Big South title in the past seven years and earned a fifth trip to the NCAA tournament. Winthrop set a new school and Big South Conference record as it won 27 games and lost just six times. The Eagles entered NCAA tournament play with the nation’s longest winning streak with 18 wins and finished the year ranked No. 9 in the CollegeInsider.Com Top 25 Mid-Major poll.
The volleyball squad captured its third consecutive Big South Conference championship and automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In doing so, the Eagles compiled a new single season school and conference record for wins with 31 while losing just four times. Winthrop became just the second school in Big South history to complete the regular season conference schedule undefeated with a 14-0 record.
The women’s tennis team won its fourth consecutive Big South Conference title this season while the men’s squad captured its second straight conference championship. Both teams have earned automatic bids to next week’s NCAA tournament. The women enter tournament play with a 21-3 record while the men are 20-4.
