ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop tennis head coach Cid Carvalho announced the signing of Brazilian standout Patricia Coimbra to a National Letter of Intent for the 2006 season.
In her last year as a junior, Coimbra, from Sao Paulo, finished first at the Brazilian national junior ranking for singles and fifth for doubles.
Coimbra, who chose Winthrop over Florida State, South Florida and South Carolina, visited Winthrop during the 2005 season and liked what she saw.
“I much liked Winthrop because I was very welcome there. I loved its campus, structure, the coaches and all I had the opportunity to meet,” said Coimbra. “It may not be a big school, but it sure does have everything I need to enjoy being a student-athlete. I really feel I’m going to like playing at Winthrop. I hope I get to play a lot and help the team achieve its goals.”
Patricia will join fellow Brazilians sophomore Ana Paula Novaes and junior Paula Takahashi and hopes to extend the Lady Eagles conference championships streak.
