TEGA CAY, SC-- The Winthrop women's golf team shot the second best team score in the final round of the Shamrock Intercollegiate Invitational and finished 8th out of 14 teams.
Winthrop entered the day at 10th and was eight strokes back of sixth. Winthrop's Morgan Reich led the charge on the final day as she posted the best individual round with a 70 to finish tied for 22nd after being tied for 51st through two rounds. Shannon Hopkins also finished tied for 22nd with a final round 78. A.J. Cunningham dropped a couple of spots as she fired an 82.
Stephanie Stocks also made a jump up the leaderboard to 36th after posting a 75. After Saturday she was tied for 51st. Jenny Brake finished alone at 50th after shooting an 82.
Winthrop's 305 in the final round was just two strokes off of High Point for the top score on Sunday.
After leading by eight strokes heading into the final round, Elon held on by three strokes to capture first place. UNC Greensboro finished second. Longwood finished third followed by William & Mary, High Point, Methodist, St. Mary's (TX), Winthrop, Wofford, Bucknell, Jackson State, St. Francis (PA), Old Dominion and Radford.
Morgan Olds of Elon led from start to finish to capture the individual honors with a three-day total of 224 (73-77-74). Stephanie Hicks of Longwood finished three strokes back and Jenna Schmidt of UNCG finished four strokes back for third.
Winthrop will be back in action on Mar. 25-27 at the William & Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, VA. This will be the final tournament before the Big South Conference Championships on Apr. 10-13.
