On Senior Night, Vydra And Chumah Lead Eagles Over UNC Asheville (11-2-05)

Isaac Scores 16th Goal

ROCK HILL, SC-- Seniors Dee Vydra and Michael Chumah each scored a goal as Winthrop defeated UNC Asheville 4-0 on Senior Night in Big South Conference men's soccer action.

It was the final Big South Conference match for both teams as Winthrop improves to 10-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in the conference. UNC Asheville falls to 2-13-1 and 1-6 in the Big South. This is the third time in the past four seasons the Eagles have won at least 10 games. Winthrop finishes with a 6-2-1 home record this season.

Vydra got the Eagles on the board in the 14th minute. Michael Chumah crossed the ball into the box and Vydra struck a shot on net, but it was stuffed by the defender. However, Vydra was able to put home the rebound and the goal tied him for the team lead in game-winners on the season with three.

Chumah made it 2-0 in the 30th minute as he took a ball from Dustin Bybee, beat two defenders and then beat Bulldog goalkeeper Michael Pereira for his fourth goal of the season. Winthrop scored its third goal of the half in the 41st minute. Chumah's pass put Bybee behind the defense and his service went directly to Isaac, who put away his 16th goal of the year. Isaac had a good shot at a hat trick as he had two breakaways. However, the first break away the ball got away from him and Pereira was there to scoop the ball up. The second time Pereira made the save with this foot.

"I'm happy with the win, but disappointed in the way we played and finished," said head coach Rich Posipanko. "I thought we lacked intensity and sharpness and we have to try and recapture that in the Mercer game as we head into the conference tournament."

Sean Weron scored his first goal of the season in the 60th minute. Weron broke free into open space and dribbled into the box. His initial shot was saved, but he was able to get the rebound and slam home the shot for a 4-0 lead.

It was senior night and Kevin Green tried his best to get a goal. He had two shots from 25 yards out or more that pinged off the post.

Patrick Mitrovich recorded his second shutout of the season and Big South play as he made five saves. Pereira in a losing effort made nine saves.

Winthrop will finish the regular season on the road at Mercer on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 7 p.m.
