Former Basketball Player John Temple Now Serves As Official Team Doctor (10-4-05)

Dr. Temple Is Now Serving As Winthrop Athletics Team Doctor

ROCK HILL, SC— Dr. John Temple, a former member of the Winthrop men’s basketball team, is serving as the official orthopedic team physician for Winthrop Athletics.

Temple, who played for the Eagles from 1991 through 1995 and received a B.S. in Chemistry, joined the OrthoCarolina staff and is trained to treat general orthopedic conditions as well as the more specialized sports-related conditions.  His office is located within the Presbyterian Matthews Hospital.

He earned his  Medical Degree from the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, and completed his internship in general surgery and his residency in orthopedic surgery at the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, PA.   He then completed his fellowship in sports medicine at the Kerlan-Jobe Sports Medicine Clinic in Los-Angeles where he worked with the Los Angeles Lakers, Dodgers, Kings, Anaheim Ducks, and the USC Trojans.

"My decision to pursue a career in Orthopedic Surgery was largely due to my interactions with our team physician as an athlete at Winthrop,” said Temple.  “The opportunity to be involved in collegiate athletics while also managing surgical and non-surgical sports injuries seemed like the ideal job for me.  To be able to come back and fill the position as Winthrop's Team Physician is truly a dream come true for me and fulfills the goal I set almost 12 years ago as a member of the men's basketball team."

Winthrop Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Training Jeff Lahr is pleased to have a former Winthrop student-athlete come back to serve the Sports Medicine Department and the present student athletes.  “Dr. Temple is providing us with the coverage and services that brings Winthrop University Sports Medicine to a level seen at the bigger Division I institutions,” says Lahr, who oversees Winthrop’s sports medicine program that oversees nearly 225 athletes.

Temple is a member of the Omnicom Delta Kappa leadership Society, the American Medical Association, The North Carolina Medical Society, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and is a candidate member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery.

A native of Michigan, Temple is married to Dr. Ana-Maria Temple and has two children, Alexandra Marie and Jake Thomas. He still plays basketball in his spare time and enjoys woodworking and travel as well.
