Dempsey’s Three-Run Blast, Strong Pitching Leads Winthrop To 4-1 Win Over Florida Atlantic; Eagles Sweep Three-Game Series From Blue Wave (5-2-04)

Break Out The Brooms! Eagles Sweep Blue Wave

ROCK HILL, SCJacob Dempsey blasted a three-run home run in the third and the Winthrop pitching staff limited Florida Atlantic to one run on six hits as the Eagles took a 4-1 victory on Sunday at The Winthrop Ballpark to sweep the three-game series from the Blue Wave.

Dempsey blasted his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot to right in the third, to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. 

Rusty Brown’s two-out double in the fourth plated Tim Mascia to cut Winthrop’s lead to two.

The Eagles got the run back in the sixth as Matt Repec lifted a sacrifice fly to left that drove in David Scoggin to give Winthrop a 4-1 lead.

Starter Jason Terry and relievers Jonathan Settle and Chris Leroux limited the Blue Wave to just two hits over the final four frames as the Eagles held on to a 4-1 victory.

Terry (1-1) gave up one run in five and two thirds innings to pick up his first win of the season.  He struck out four, walked one and gave up four hits.

Settle threw a scoreless one and one-third innings before giving way to Leroux for the final two frames.  Settle struck out one and gave up one hit, his first hit allowed in 11 and one-third innings of work. 

Jason Costello (3-1) gave up three runs (two earned) in four and two-thirds innings to take the loss for FAU.  He struck out four and yielded five hits.

Leroux earned his fifth save of the season by holding FAU to one hit in two innings.

Dempsey had two hits and drove in three runs while Scoggin added a pair of hits to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.

Winthrop improved to 29-16 with the win, while FAU fell to 33-13 with the loss.  The Eagles held the Blue Wave to just five runs in the three-game series.

The Eagles, winners of six straight, return to action on Wednesday when they host Furman at 7:30 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
