Winthrop Drops Road Game 79-47 At Liberty (2-3-04)

Carey Leads Lady Eagles With 13 Points

     LYNCHBURG, VA—Winthrop lost its eighth straight road game after a 79-47 loss at Liberty, Tuesday evening in Big South Conference action.

     The inside game of Liberty was too strong for Winthrop as Katie Feenstra scored 40 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. The Lady Flames dominated the glass 51-39.

     With the loss Winthrop drops to 4-14 overall and 1-5 in the Big South. Liberty improves to 14-6 overall and 6-0 in league play.

     Winthrop struggled offensively for the second straight game shooting 23 percent and committing 22 turnovers. Meanwhile Liberty shot well in the first half at 51 percent and finished the game at 44 percent.

     Liberty took control in the first half as Feenstra scored 16 of her 40 points. Her first basket of the half put her over the 1,000 career point mark. The Lady Flames held Winthrop to 13 percent shooting and forced 11 turnovers to take a 42-12 halftime lead.

     In the second half the Lady Eagles came out stronger and outscored Liberty 17-9 over the first seven and a half minutes. However, Feenstra was too much offensively for the Lady Eagles.

     Ashley Carey came off the bench to lead Winthrop with 13 points as the only player in double-figures. Robin Curley added eight points and nine boards. The only other Lady Flame in double-figures was Michelle Parker with 12.

     It was the 14th straight game Winthrop has lost to Liberty and the eighth straight at the Vines Center.

    Winthrop returns home for a 4 p.m. match-up on Saturday against Radford, which ends the first half of the Big South schedule.
