Men's Golf Team Finishes 4th In 14-Team Navy Fall Invitational (9-15-03)

Eagles' Matt Johnson Ties For Second In Medal Play With Five Under 137

ANNAPOLIS, MD--Winthrop's men finished fourth out of 14 schools in the 2003 Navy Fall Invitational played this past weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course.

Senior Matt Johnson led the Eagles as he fired a 5-under par 36-hole score of 137 to tie for second place in the medalist standings.  Navy's Billy Hurley won medalist honors as he shot 130, including a course record 61 in the final round.

Georgetown University won the team championship by 14 shots over runner-up Towson University.  Georgetown shot a 3-under score of 565 (280-285).  George Washington placed third with a 584 (16 over) while Winthrop was two shots further back at 586.

Johnson was tied with Georgetown's James Farrah heading into the final day after both players shot 68's on Saturday.  He turned in another strong performance on Sunday with a 69, but it couldn't compete with Hurley's 61 which shattered the old course mark by four strokes.
