DENVER, CO -- Former Winthrop basketball standout Pierre Wooten kept his NBA career hopes alive after making the first cut on the Denver Nuggets 2003 Rookie/Free Agent Camp roster.
Wooten is among the 23 players still in camp after the Nuggets cut 11 players following Tuesday's practice. Wooten and Kevin Fletcher, two of the four invitees from Denver's Open Tryout two weeks ago, are still in camp which continues this weekend at the Pepsi Center.
Wooten is practicing with the Nuggets twice a day through Friday and once on Saturday before departing for Los Angeles.
The 35 players had been taking part in two-a-day practices on Monday and Tuesday before the cuts were announced.
The players that did not make the cut are Ganon Baker (UNC-Wilmington and Open Tryout), David Bell (Montana), Ruben Douglas (New Mexico), David Fisher (Colorado State), Alexus Foyle (BYU-Hawaii), D.J. Harrison (Colorado), Anthony Lever (Oregon), Willie Mitchell (UAB), Ramon Taylor (Eastern Illinois and Open Tryout), Tyrone Washington (Mississippi State) and Kent Williams (Southern Illinois).
The current Nuggets participating in the camp includes top draft pick Carmelo Anthony along with current Nuggets Chris Andersen, Junior Harrington, Nene, Predrag Savovic, Jeff Trepagnier, Nikoloz Tskitishvili, Rodney Whiteand Vincent Yarbrough.
The Nuggets will participate in both the Los Angeles Summer Pro League (July 13-17) and the Reebok Rocky Mountain Revue in Salt Lake City (July 18-26). The L.A. SPL games are held at The Pyramid in Long Beach, home to Long Beach State. The Nuggets first contest will be against the Memphis Grizzlies on Sunday, July 13 at 6:15 p.m mountain time. The Nuggets' other L.A. games are: July 14 vs. Dallas (6:15 p.m. MT); July 16 vs. Houston (6:15 p.m.); and July 17 vs. L.A. Clippers (8:30 p.m.).
