Bulldogs Pound Eagles 10-3 (4-23-03)

Bulldogs and Eagles Split Season Series

CHARLESTON, SC – The Citadel scored nine runs over the middle three innings to down Winthrop 10-3 in Wednesday night baseball action from Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, SC.

The win broke a three-game winning streak for the Eagles.

“The middle three innings things didn’t go our way,” head coach Joe Hudak said.  “A lot of things didn’t go our way tonight.  There were a lot of balls that they hit in just the right place or that we misplayed.  We had chances early in the game to make things go our way and we didn’t.  That’s just the way it goes sometimes.”

The Eagles started the game off right, scoring a run in the first to take a 1-0 lead.  With two outs, third baseman David Scoggin singled to drive in Matt Matkovich to give Winthrop the initial lead.  Matkovich doubled with one out to reach base.

The Citadel roared back with four in the fourth, one in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 9-1 lead.

The Bulldogs added one more in the seventh while the Eagles added two in the eighth to set the final score at 10-3.

Mike Honce (4-1) gave up four runs on four hits in four innings of work to take the loss for the Eagles.  He struck out four and walked three.  It was his first loss of the season.

Griff Beckham (1-0) picked up the win for the Bulldogs, giving up just one run on three hits in five innings of work.  He struck out six and walked three.

Winthrop returns to action Friday as they host Big South Conference foe Coastal Carolina at 7:30 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark in Rock Hill, SC.
