ELON, N.C.—Winthrop sophomore Clayton Almeida captured four awards, including 2003 Big South Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Year, during the league’s banquet Wednesday night at Elon University where the conference championships are being held beginning today at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
Almeida, a Brazil native, has now been voted Big South Conference Player of the Year twice. Last year’s conference freshman of the year also added a All-Big South singles award, All-Big South doubles award and All-Academic Team honor to his portfolio. He led the Eagles to the number one seed in this week’s conference tournament as Winthrop finished the regular season with a 6-1 Big South record and overall 13-3 slate.
Joining Almeida on the post-season honors list were teammates Michael Kweicien, a junior from Warsaw, Poland, who earned a spot on the All-Big South singles team and his doubles partner, Adam Narczewski, a junior from Goynia, Poland. Both Kweicien and Narczewski were honored as All-Big South performers for the second straight year.
