Marshall Voted 2003 Big South Coach of the Year; Wooten, Walker and Houston Also Honored

Eagles Reap Post-Season Big South Conference Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Winthrop head coach Gregg Marshall has been voted the 2003 Big South Conference Coach of the Year after leading his Eagles to a third regular season Big South championship in his five-year tenure.  For Marshall, this is his second Coach of the Year honor after receiving the award in 1999.

In addition to Marshall’s award, senior point guard Pierre Wooten, junior forward Tyrone Walker and freshman center Billy Houston were also honored prior to the opening game of the 2003 Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Championship Tournament that got underway at four sites Tuesday night.  The  awards, as well as the All-Conference teams and the All-Freshman team, are voted on by the League’s head coaches, sports information directors and selected media. The Scholar-Athlete  award and the All-Academic team are selected by the sports information directors.

Wooten and Walker were voted to the All-Big South First Team while Houston was named to the five-man All-Freshman squad.  Wooten also took home the 2003 Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award.

Coastal Carolina’s Torrey Butler and Winthrop’s Gregg Marshall won the top men’s basketball awards for 2003 the League announced tonight prior to the start of the 2003 Advance Auto Parts Men’s Basketball Championship.

Marshall earned his second Coach of the Year honor for leading his team to a first place finish for the third time in five years. Butler was tabbed Player of the Year to become only the third player in League history to win the award more than once. Butler, who also won the award in 2001, joins Coastal Carolina’s Tony Dunkin and UNC Asheville’s Josh Pittman as the League’s only repeat winners.

Radford freshman Whit Holcomb-Faye was named Freshman of the Year and Winthrop Pierre Wooten earned the men’s basketball Scholar-Athlete award.
