ROCK HILL, SC—Kelli Johnson tossed a one-hit shutout leading Winthrop to an 8-0 victory over Tennesee State, Saturday morning at the Winthrop/Ringor Invitational.
Johnson improved to 7-7 as she struck out eight and walked two. She also went 1-for-2 at the plate with an RBI.
A five-run fifth opened the game up for the Lady Eagles (11-15). Katy Agee led off the inning with a triple to right field. Two batters later Agee was thrown out trying to steal home. Carol Douglas came up with the bases loaded and delivered an RBI single down the left field line. Stephanie Turney hit a soft grounder to the shortstop with the bases loaded on the next play. Shortstop Catriona Smith tried to nail Sarah Bargeron at home, but the throw wasn’t in time. Her throw got by the catcher, allowing Lindsey Merriman to score from second.
Winthrop had chances to score more runs as it left a total of nine runners stranded. Katie Kipisz and Agee each had two hits. Eight different players scored a run.
Tennessee State drops to 3-12 overall and 1-2 in the tournament. Winthrop is also 1-2 in the tournament.
