ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop men's golf team is tied for fourth out of nine schools after the first round of The Citadel Invitational at Pine Forrest Country Club in Summerville while the Lady Eagles are last out of eight teams in the UCF Invitational at Stoneybrook Country Club in Orlando.
The Winthrop men shot a opening round of 316 and are tied with Stetson and Western Carolina. Gardner-Webb leads the 36-hole event at 302 followed by Flagler College, 305, and South Carolina State, 308.
The Eagles are led by Matt Johnson who shot a opening round of 75 (35-40) over the 6,614 yard course. He stands in fifth place three strokes behind the leader Steve McDonald of Gardner-Webb.
The Winthrop women opened play with a round of 348 which leaves the Lady Eagles 44 shots behind tournament leader Florida Southern. Jeanine Hall turned in the best round of the day for Winthrop with a 83 (39-44) to rank 28th. Teammate Erin Campbell is one shot back at 84 (42-42).
