ANNAPOLIS, MD – Matt Johnson paced the Eagles shooting 139 over the two-day tournament to lead Winthrop to victory in the Navy Fall Invitational held over the weekend at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course in Annapolis, MD.
Winthrop shot 575 as a team, edging Navy and Towson, who both shot 577 at the par 71 course. Four of Winthrop’s five golfers finished in the top 25 individually of the tournament.
Johnson’s 139 was good for third place in the tournament, only two shots back of Towson’s Billy Wingerd, who took the individual title. Wingerd defeated Navy’s Billy Hurley in a playoff to take the title.
Steve Almanis shot 143 and tied for seventh, while Kyle Christman shot 146 and tied for 17th place individually.
Luke Elfner tied for 23rd place with a 148, and Jimmy Marinelli shot 157 to tie for 54th place to round out the scoring for the Eagles.
The Eagles return to action next weekend at the McDonald Cup in New Haven, CT.
