ROCK HILL, SC–Winthrop’s women’s tennis team took over sole possession of first place in the Big South Conference and the Eagle men ran its winning streak to 14 straight with Friday afternoon’s sweep of Coastal Carolina.
The Lady Eagles entered the match tied for first place with Coastal and won a nail-biter, 4-3, to stay unbeaten in Big South play with a 5-0 record while improving to 12-2 overall. The Lady Chanticleers fell to 4-1 in league action. Winthrop’s men also stayed unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 and improved to 15-1 overall with a 5-2 win. The Eagles are tied with Charleston Southern for first place in the Big South.
Saturday’s dual match against Charleston Southern has been postponed until April 13 at 2:00 p.m.
In the women’s action, the Lady Eagles lost two out of three doubles matches and then fought back to take the singles 4-1. Coastal’s Emma Kidd played in the doubles competition, but did not play at her No. 1 singles position due to an injury. Renata Caceres won the deciding match in a tie breaker (3-6, 7-5, 7-6) over Dana Goffin.
In the men’s action, Winthrop took all three doubles matches and four of six singles for the 5-2 win.
