ROCK HILL, SC--Michael Hicks’ short jumper in the lane and four free throws by Brian Evans in the final 19 seconds lifted Texas A&M--Corpus Christi to a 67-64 non-conference victory over Winthrop on Monday night.
The loss snapped Winthrop’s home winning streak at 16 games and drops the Eagles to 9-9 on the season while Texas A&M-CC evens its record at 10-10.
Hicks, who came in averaging 27.2 points per game, had 28 in the game. It was his short jumper with 51 seconds left in the game that put the Islanders ahead for good at 63-61. He had tied the game at 61 with two free throws with 1:38 remaining. Evans gave his team a four point lead at 64-61 with 19 seconds left. Then following a 3-point goal by Winthrop’s Pierre Wooten, he converted two more free throws with less than a second remaining to clinch the win.
The loss overshadowed a double-double performance by Winthrop’s Marcus Stewart who finished with 18 points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Eagle freshman Tyrone Walker also came up with a career-high 15 points and Derrick Knox scored 17 on five of five shooting from beyond the arc before fouling out with 1:38 left to play.
Armond Wainright scored 12 and Lee Denmon added 11 for the winners who came into the game averaging 84 points per contest.
