ROCK HILL, SC – The Charlotte Lady 49ers used 14-3 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Winthrop Lady Eagles for a 68-56 victory, Saturday afternoon at the Winthrop Coliseum.
Charlotte (4-2) scored the first points of the second half, after the game was tied at halftime, and held the lead for the remainder of the game. Winthrop trailed by as many as 13 points in the first half, but fought back and had a three-point lead heading into the final seconds, but Charlotte’s Monica League was fouled with two seconds and a chance to make it a two point game. League made the first and missed the second, but Jen Williams’ put-back tied the game at 30-30.
Charlotte won the battle of the boards 44-36 and it showed as the Lady 49ers managed 16 second chance points and outscored the Lady Eagles 24-8 in the paint. Alicia Abernathy scored a game-high 17 points, added 10 rebounds, three assists and five steals to pace Charlotte. Adrienne Jordan added a double-double of her own with 13 points and 10 rebounds. She also had three blocks. Tonika Smith and League each had 11 points.
Winthrop (0-5) was led by Kia Bell’s 13 points, three assists and two steals. Janette Arrington scored 10 points and had three assists and two steals. Anne Hollensen had eight points, nine rebounds, two steals and two blocks.
Next up for Winthrop will be Peace College on Monday at 4:45 p.m.
