Pritchard Selected Verizon Volleyball Academic All-America

Dec. 13, 2001

ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop junior middle hitter Jennifer Pritchard was selected today as a member of the 2001 Verizon Academic All-America women’s volleyball team. The Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada product is one of 18 players in NCAA Division I to be selected to one of the three teams.

Pritchard, a third team selection, has achieved a perfect 4.0 grade point average while majoring in biology. She plans to apply for medical school next year. Pritchard was nominated for the award by the Winthrop sports information department based on her academic and athletic achievements. To be considered for nomination, a player must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or above based on a 4.0 scale and be a significant contributor to her team.

In addition to helping lead coach Joel McCartney’s Eagle volleyball team to a 22-12 overall record and a sparkling 13-3 mark and second place finish in the Big South Conference, Pritchard had her finest individual season in a Winthrop uniform. She was voted to the All-Big South Conference first team and to the Big South Conference All-Academic Team. She led the team in attack percentage with a .308 average and also set a new Winthrop single season record for kills with 461. She ranked second on the squad in blocks with 84. In three years, Pritchard now has 1.053 kills and is one of six Eagles to reach that plateau.
