            ROCK HILL, SC – Marketing Director Jason Capel has announced that Sonny’s Barbecue has agreed to sponsor the inaugural 2001 Winthrop/Waterford Invitational.

    The Winthrop golf program is holding its first tournament this spring since the 91-92 season. The 17-team tournament will be called the 2001 Winthrop/Waterford Invitational Presented by Sonny’s Barbecue and will be held March 4-5 at Waterford Golf Course.

    The other teams, not including the host, are: Evansville, Western Carolina, Stetson, Campbell, Radford, High Point, Army, Mercer, Jacksonville, Charleston Southern, Queens, Connecticut, Holy Cross, Rutgers, Towson State and Laval University in Quebec, Ontario.

    "To have a corporate sponsor of this magnitude for the tournaments first year could be what we need to set this tournament off," said Winthrop golf coach Eddie Weldon. "We appreciate the support of the local community, but the support of Sonny’s is above and beyond."
