He graduated with a degree in business administration in 1983. He was a member of Winthrop’s first baseball team. Kirby helped lead the Eagles to a record of 140 wins and 36 losses and a trip to the 1980 NAIA World Series where Winthrop finished as the national runner-up. He still holds the Winthrop career record for triples with 16, triples in a season with nine, and is tied for most stolen bases in a game with four. He remains actively involved with Winthrop Athletics having served on the Eagle Club Board and on numerous Eagle Club committees.
