He graduated in 1981 with a degree in business management. He was a member of Winthrop’s first men’s basketball team from 1978-81 that compiled a record of 73 wins and 31 losses during his playing career. His 1980-81 team finished 31-8 and still holds the school record for most wins in a season. Riese holds the school records for career assists with 656, assists in a single season with 317, and assists in a single game with 17. He holds the Winthrop record for career steals with 476, steals in a season with 208, and steals in a game with 13. Riese is also tied for the single game blocked shots record with seven. He is tied for most games played and most games started in a season with 39 and ranks seventh in career starts with 102.
