She graduated from Winthrop in 1950 with a degree in physical education. Ms. Griffin was appointed Winthrop’s first Athletic Director in 1970 and helped oversee the integration of men’s sports programs at the college. She also served as Winthrop’s women’s basketball coach from 1971-1974 and compiled a winning percentage of .735 (50 wins and 18 losses) which still ranks as the best in school history.  Her last team in 1973-74 compiled a 19-6 record, the most successful season in Lady Eagle history. She has been honored twice by the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports as a pioneer and for extraordinary service, and received a Woman of Achievement Award from the Governor of South Carolina for her pioneer work in sports for girls and women. In 1994, she was given Athletic Director Emeritus status by Winthrop University.
