Kevin Slowey was selected by the Minnesota Twins as the 73rd overall pick in the Second Round of the 2005 Major League Baseball Draft to become the third highest draft pick in Winthrop history. He is now a member of the Colorado Rockies. In his final year as an Eagle, Slowey was named an American Baseball Coaches Association First Team All-American, a Second Team Collegiate Baseball and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association All-American, and a Third Team Baseball America All-American. During his Winthrop career, Slowey compiled a record of 29-9 with an overall earned run average of 3.15. He had his best year as an Eagle in 2004 when he had a 14-2 record, a 2.18 ERA and 134 strikeouts. He still ranks first in Winthrop career pitching history with 29 wins, 331 strikeouts and 349 innings pitched. He was named to the All-Big South Conference First Team in 2005 and the Second Team in 2004. In 2005, he was voted the Big South Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
