He graduated in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in business management and received a master’s degree from Winthrop in 1983. He enjoyed a record-setting playing career in men’s soccer and earned NAIA All-District 6 honors in 1977, 1978 and 1979. He ranks first on the Winthrop career goals list with 69 and is second on the career points list with 141. He scored four goals in a single game four times during his career. Following his playing career, Griffin entered the softball coaching field. In seven years as head coach of the Lady Eagles, he compiled a record of 225 wins and just 87 losses. He ranks as the winningest softball coach percentage-wise in Winthrop history. In 1988, he was named Big South Conference Coach of the Year. In 1997 he took over the coaching reins at Stetson University where he was named 2001 Atlantic Sun Conference Coach of the Year. His career coaching record for 18 years stands at 623-312.
