Dr. Anthony J. DiGiorgio has served 24 years as the ninth president of Winthrop University until his retirement this year. Throughout his tenure, he has been a strong advocate for intercollegiate athletics and has held leadership positions at the Big South Conference and NCAA levels. His impact on Winthrop Athletics can be measured by the championships that have been won, the addition of six sports, and the facilities that have been constructed for baseball, softball, track and field, soccer, and tennis. The Winthrop Coliseum, the crown jewel of the athletic complex, has also undergone significant renovation. When he became president in 1989, scholarship dollars for student-athletes totaled around $180,000. At his retirement the total stands near $1.9 million. Opportunities for female student-athletes also increased from 60 to 160. His emphasis on community service has been rewarded as the Eagles established themselves as leaders in the Big South Conference.
