Robert Lake was named The Crons Brand Pitcher of the Week in the Big South Conference for games played Mar. 21-27.
Lake, a native of Prosperity, SC, led the Eagles to a 2-1 victory over the Liberty Flames on Friday in the second game of a series-opening doubleheader, handing the Flames their first conference loss of the season. He tossed a season-high 8.0 innings, allowed only five hits, one of those an extra-base hit, and surrendered one run with no walks and four strikeouts in snapping Winthrop’s four-game losing streak. After allowing a leadoff single in the first inning, Lake retired the next 12 batters and eventually held Liberty to a .185 batting average en route to his first win of the season. It was also the third time this season that the right-handed pitcher has not given up a walk in a start.
