Lauren Proctor Wins ITA Regional Championship, First Ever for Winthrop

Alisa Soloveva wins consolation bracket title.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Winthrop women's tennis competed at ITA Regionals Oct. 19-23 with No. 55-ranked Lauren Proctor bringing home the first-ever ITA Regional Championship in program history.

The junior from Bradenton, Fla. took down a remarkable six ACC foes en route to the title, including defeating the tournament's number one seed, No. 22-ranked Jessie Aney of UNC. Proctor's championship win came over No. 54 Samantha Harris of Duke, 7-6 (7), 6-2. 

"I just feel very happy with my result and honored to have done it for Winthrop," said Proctor after her championship. "Being successful is never something that happens because of one thing; it's always a team effort and I just have the best people supporting me. This is something that I share with my coaches, team, family and Winthrop because without them it just wouldn't be possible – Go Eagles!"

Sophomore Alisa Soloveva won the main draw consolation bracket. Soloveva was defeated in the first round of the main draw, but powered through the consolation with five straight tiebreak victories. Her semifinals and finals wins came over in-state opponents from South Carolina (Megan Davies) and Clemson (Tate Schroeder), respectively. Junior Megan Kauffman played her way into the main draw with two qualifying wins, then earned a Round One victory over Sydney Riley of Clemson. 

By reaching the main draw final, Proctor has qualified for the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships held in Indian Wells, Calif. on Nov. 1-5.

Next up as a squad, the Eagles will prepare for the College of Charleston Invitational, Nov. 3-5, Winthrop's final fall tournament.
