ROCK HILL, SC--The Winthrop women's basketball team has lost another player to injury as sophomore forward
Ronata Rogers is out with a broken foot and could be gone for the season with three regular season games and the Big South Conference Championship Tournament remaining.
Without Rogers, the Eagles (4-22, 3-14 BSC) are down to seven players in uniform, which includes five scholarship players and two walk-ons, as they prepare for Saturday afternoon's game at Presbyterian College (15-11, 11-6 BSC). Tip off in Templeton Arena, where PC is 11-2 this season, is set for 2 p.m.
Rogers (Greensboro, NC) is the third player this year to suffer a broken foot (
Schaquilla Nunn and
Erica Williams being the other two), while a fourth player (
Jimecheia Banks) is recovering from a broken ankle. Rogers had started 16 games after her playing time increased this season due to injuries to other players. She has averaged 4.1 points and 5.7 rebounds this year and enjoyed career highs in scoring and rebounding. She recorded her first career double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds against Charleston Southern and also had 15 rebounds against Longwood. Â
In the first meeting against PC on Jan. 12, the Blue Hose claimed a 59-48 win to snap a six-game losing streak against Winthrop. The Eagles have now won eight of the last 10 meetings and own a 20-4 lead in the all-time series. In that first game, two Winthrop players scored 31 of the team's 48 points.Â
Erica Williams, who suffered a season-ending broken foot on Jan. 30, led the Eagles with 17 points while
Aliyah Kilpatrick finished with 14. PC has a balanced scoring attack as seven players are averaging six or more points and only one player is in double figures as Taylor Petty leads with an 11.3 average.
The Eagles also have one double figure scorer as Kilpatrick averages 13.7 points. In her last game on Tuesday night against Radford, the junior point guard became the 19th player in Winthrop women's history to score 1,000 points.Â
Following Saturday's game, Winthrop will host Liberty next Tuesday night in its final home game at 7 p.m.
