BATON ROUGE, LA--
Kamito Hirai's collegiate career came to a close on Saturday after he carded a 81 in the final round of the 2013 NCAA Baton Rouge Regional and finished in a tie for 55th place.
Hirai (Summerville, SC) finished with a 54-hole total of 234 (79-74-81) as he was attempting to become the first Winthrop golfer to advance to the national finals.
He struggled on the final day with eight bogeys, one double bogey and a birdie. Hira opened on the back nine at LSU's 7,436-yard University Club course tied for 34th place, but once again met trouble at No. 10, a hole that he double bogeyed Thursday and bogeyed Friday. He lost another stroke to par as he bogeyed it again Saturday. Hirai went on to shoot five-over 41 on the back nine and shot 40 on the front with five more bogeys. He birdied the par 5 sixth hole.
While Hirai failed to advance to the championship finals in Atlanta, the Big South will be represented by Coastal Carolina which finished fifth and earned a spot in the 30-team field.
