Winthrop Women's Tennis Picked First in Preseason Rankings for Eighth Consecutive Year

ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop's Women's Tennis team has been picked first in the Big South preseason polls, which is picked by the Big South Coaches.  This is the eighth consecutive year that the Lady Eagles were voted preseason number one in the Big South.  Winthrop received nine first place votes and 99 total points.

Coach Cid Carvalho's squad returns its top six players from a year ago, including Player of the Year Yasmine Alkema.  Winthrop opened its 2013 season with a 7-0 win over Wofford on Jan. 13.

Charleston Southern received the second most points with 85 and Coastal Carolina received the third most points with 78.  Listed below are the full preseason rankings of the Big South.  The Big South now has ten schools with newcomer Longwood.

The Lady Eagles have won 15 Big South Championships and seven consecutive.  Coach Carvalho had this to say, “I am proud of my players for what they have accomplished in the past.  We are looking forward to the challenges of this season.”

The Lady Eagles travel to College of Charleston this Saturday.  The team's first conference game is Feb. 28 at Presbyterian College.
