ROCK HILL, SC--Winthrop's
Yasmine Alkema lost to UCLA's Kyle McPhillips on Saturday in the preliminary single draw of the 2012 Riviera/ITA All-American Championship which is being held at the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades, CA.
The senior from Algeria and the two-time defending Big South Conference Player of the Year fell 6-2, 6-1 to one of the top recruited players in the country last year.
"Yasmine had a tough draw," said Winthrop women's tennis coach
Cid Carvalho who accompanied Alkema to California. "She had to play UCLA 's top recruit, Kyle McPhillips, in the first round. McPhillips has been ranked #3 in the freshman class and as high as #11 in the world in juniors. It was a great honor and valuable experience for Yasmine and our program to have participated in the All American."
