CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA--Four Winthrop women's tennis players turned in strong performances this past weekend at the 2012 UVa Fall Invitational that was held at the Snyder Tennis Center on the University of Virginia campus.
Senior
Yasmine Alkema (Algiers, Algeria) and junior
Andressa Garcia(Sao Paulo, Brazil) placed fourth in the A1 and A2 single draws, respecitvely, while sophomore
Ekin Gunaysu (Ankara, Turkey) won the consolation draw in the B singles bracket and freshman
Caitlin Cridland (Perth, Australia) took three of four matches in her round robin competition.
While advancing to the consolation match in her bracket, Alkema defeated VCU's Olga Barshchevskaya (6-4, 5-7, 6-0) and Stephanie Nauta of Virginia (7-6, 2-6, 6-4). She dropped into the consolation match after losing to UVA's Erin Vierra (6-4, 3-0 ret.) and then fell to Tooli Wilkins of UNCG in the third place match.
Garcia claimed wins over VCU's Josefin Hjetquist (6-3, 7-6) and ODU's Aleksandra Mitrovska (7-5, 3-6, 6-0) before losing to Julia Elbaba of UVA (6-1, 6-2) which put her in the consolation bracket against Olga Terteac of VCU.
After dropping her first match to ODU's Ivana Vukovic, Gunaysu swept through the consolation bracket by defeating Josefin Andersson of South Carolina (7-6, 6-4), Kara Kucin from Marshall (6-2, 6-2) and Marshall's Kai Broomfield (6-0, 7-6) to claim the consolation round of B singles.
Cridland's three victories in the C singles round robin came over Wake Forest's Brigita Bercyte (6-1, 6-2), Jackie Lee of William & Mary (6-4, 6-2), and ODU's Juliana Pires (3-6, 6-3, 6-3).
