Stephanie Morris (right) and Ann (Dean) Parks Were Honored At NAIA District 6 Reunion
SPARTANBURG, SC--Two former Winthrop women's basketball players were honored last Saturday night--one for her playing career and the other for her coaching accomplishments--during the NAIA District 6 Reunion banquet which was held on the campus of USC-Upstate.
Winthrop basketball standout Stephanie Morris was among 29 players who were recognized on the All-Time NAIA District 6 first and second teams and honorable mention list. Morris, a 1986 graduate, who says she will always remember her last game as an Eagle when she set the women's single game scoring record with 37 points against UNC Charlotte, was named to the All-Time Second Team for her outstanding Winthrop career. Ann (Dean) Parks, who played during the AIAW era, was honored for her coaching career at Newberry College.
Morris played for the Eagles from 1982 to 1986 and during that four-year span Morris left her name all over the Winthrop record book. In addition to that 37-point outburst against Charlotte on March 1, 1986, Morris is still listed on the Winthrop career top 10 list in eight categories, including games played, minutes played, points scored, field goals made and attempted, field goal percentage, rebounds and steals. She stands fourth in the Winthrop Women's 1,000 Point Club with 1,550 and she is second in both field goals made and attempted as she was 664 for 1,404 for a .473 career shooting percentage which still ranks seventh.
In addition to her scoring prowess, Morris also was a strong rebounder and defender as she ranks third with 838 rebounds and is seventh in career steals with 177.
Morris earned a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and has been teaching pyhysical education at Satchel Ford Elementary located in Columbia, SC for the past 25 years. She also coached JV Volleyball for six seasons from 1990 - 1996 at Dreher High School in Columbia.
Dean was also as one of the top four all-time NAIA District 6 head coaches. During her seven years as Newberry College's head coach, Dean was voted NAIA District 6 Coach of the Year twice (1985 and 1988) and is one of only three coaches, along with Claflin's Nelson Brownlee and Francis Marion's Sylvia Rhyne Hatchell to receive that honor twice. The fourth former head coach honored was Marie “Scooter” Barnette of College of Charleston.
Dean played at Winthrop from 1970-74.
