ROCK HILL, SC-- For the second straight week, sophomore guard
Dequesha McClanahan has been named the Big South Conference Women's Basketball Choice Hotels Player of the Week.
McClanahan averaged 19.5 points per game and narrowly missed averaging a double-double as she dished out 19 assists to lead Winthrop to a pair of Big South wins over the weekend to move into a tie for second in the Conference standings. She got her week going with 18 points, nine assists, and three steals to fuel her squad to a 71-69 win over league-leading Liberty on Feb. 18. The win was the first over the Lady Flames since 2008 and just the second against the Lady Flames since 1997. The guard followed that effort with her 15
th 20-point game this season as she recorded 21 points in the win over Radford on Feb. 20. She also chipped in 10 assists, six boards and three steals against the Highlanders. Her 10 assists against Radford gave her 195 on the season and broke the Winthrop single-season assist record that stood for 30 years. McClanahan is only 13 helpers shy of the Big South's all-time assists record.
"We are so happy that Dequesha has been recognized again this week for her outstanding play against two very tough opponents," said head coach Marlene Stollings. "She continually ignited our offense in both games with her solid decision making in the open court and ability to score in multiple ways."
With the game against Liberty tied at 62-62, McClanahan scored on back-to-back possessions to put Winthrop up four with 1:40 to play. Leading by four points after making two free throws, McClanahan got a steal and went down to make one more free throw for the five point lead.
On Monday she scored her 15th 20-plus game as she finished with her sixth career double-double (21 points, 10 assists). It was also the sixth game of the year with 10 or more assists. McClanahan scored 18 of her 21 points in the second half and played a huge role in the run that opened up the game, a lead Winthrop pushed to 20 at one point. She scored seven points in a 12-5 run that put Winthrop up double-figures. She accounted for 45 of the team's 67 points between points scored and assists (67 percent of the offense). She also went over the 900 career point mark (916).
