ROCK HILL, SC—Junior
Diana Choibekova has been named the Big South Player of the Week by College Sports Madness.
Choibekova averaged 16.5 points per game in the wins over UNC Asheville and Liberty last week in helping the Lady Eagles in two victories. Choibekova had eight points and six rebounds at Asheville as she was in foul trouble most of the game but hit a big three down the stretch to answer a Bulldog run as they tried to fight back.
On Saturday, Choibekova led Winthrop with 25 points as it upset league-leading Liberty. Choibekova was 9-for-22 from the field and connected on seven threes, putting her over 100 on the season. She became just the second different player in Big South history to make 100 or more threes in a single-season. She is now just five shy of tying the single-season record in the Big South.
Choibekova hit a few clutch shots in the win over the Flames as she answered a 10-0 run that put Liberty in front 51-50 with a three-pointer with 9:26 to play. Then she broke a tie with a three-pointer with 7:26 to play.
In addition to her 25 points, Choibekova added four rebounds and three steals. She is leading the team in rebounding at 6.0 per game.
