BOONE, NC-- The Winthrop men's and women's track teams had their final tune-ups for next weekends Big South Conference Indoor Championships with five first place finishes and a number of other top three performances at the Appalachian State Pre-Conference Meet held Friday at the Holmes Center.
The Winthrop men were led by
Adam Leroux (Jr., Upper Tantallon, Nova Scotia), who continued a strong indoor season with a first place finish in the 500 meter dash with a time of 1:05.92. Freshman teammate
Andrew Chavous was second in the event with a time of 1:07.48.
AJ Fitzsimmons (Jr., Charleston, SC) claimed his second mile run title of the indoor season as he ran the distance in 4:24.21.
Gabe Holguin (So., Panama City, FL) finished third in the mile with a time of 4:24.52. The men's 4x400 meter relay team also captured first place as the quartet turned in a time of 3:30.09.
In the women's events, Sharonne Honor (Jr., Fort Washington, MD) won the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 8.18 seconds. Winthrop dominated the 300 meter dash as it took the 500 top four positions. The freshman duo of Deshaun Squires (Pittsburgh, PA) and Shalace Rose (Camden, SC) finished one-two with times of 42.61 and 42.97 seconds, respectively. Senior Latasha Watson (Stephens City, VA) took third with a time of 43.83.
Two more freshman finished second and third in the 500 meter dash. Hannah Hadaway (Rural Retreat, VA) was clocked in 1:27.51 while Vicki Crise (Natrona Heights, PA) finished at 1:27.78. In the 800 meter run, freshman Sarah Devaux (Fort Walton Beach, FL) finished second in 2:29.96.
Winthrop will travel to Blacksburg, VA on Feb. 24 and 25 for the Indoor Big South Championships which will be held at Virginia Tech.
