Michael Chen captured wins on the opening day of the 2012 Carolinas Invitational being held this weekend at Memorial Courts.
Nagovnak (Kraubath, Austria), who transferred to Winthrop from the University of Tennessee, defeated South Carolina's Ben Barnette (2-6, 7-5, 6-4) in the Div. I singles. Comerford (Johannesburg, S. Africa) won his Div. 2 singles match against UNC Asheville's Ryan Matthews (6-1, 6-0). Altieri (Lake Wylie, SC) defeated Presbyterian's Steven Weaver (6-7, 6-4, 6-4) and Chen (Johnson City, TN) claimed a victory over James Flynn of UNC Greensboro (6-1, 6-0).

Steven Patrick (Knoxville, TN) took a 8-6 win over the Campbell team of Steven Billington and Rik Van Gerwen.
Action in the three-day even resumes on Saturday at 9 a.m. and will continue at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
